Hideous Destructor 2010 | Knee Deep in KDiZD: Hangar | No Failure Run
Think of this as my (extremely belated) celebration of going through 200 HDest videos. Something completely different yet completely the same! I might've said this once before, but Hideous Destructor is a mod that's been in development since 2007, and still is being developed to this very day. That's 15 years of development on a single gameplay mod! Quite remarkable. The changes done over the years is significant enough that playing older releases almost seems like playing an entirely different mod.
Today's run is brought to you by the 2010 version of HDest. Why 2010? 'Cause further earlier versions are gone and this is as far back as I can find. So many things that we take for granted are gone, from leaning to 'ERPs. At the same time, so many conveniences are in our palms like not having encumbrance at all or having the summoning talismans spawn actual marines instead of ghosts. It's certainly a whiplash after playing so much of the latest versions, you'll note some of my instinct moves end up going nowhere in this run and I have to reorient myself.
I've been meaning to do one of these historical revisit runs of older HDest versions, but have been wondering just what kind of maps I should running it with. Enter KDiKDiZD, a demake of a remake specifically made to be as classic as possible. Perfect.
Well, okay, not quite. There are some hiccups in the way, what with this being a mod that's primarily made with vanilla in mind. No easy Decorate replacements, for one. Only Dehacked and all the shenaniganeries related. Goodness knows this mod isn't even compatible with GZD in the first place until additional patches made it possible, and I had to do some fiddling myself 'cause the palette would just ruin HDest's sprites (among other shenanigans), but I managed to get it somewhat okay in the end. Not perfect, but playable enough.
