How to Connect your ROKU Remote to TV (Pair & Sync)
To connect your Roku remote to your TV, it’s important to clarify that Roku remotes don’t directly control the TV’s power or volume in all cases—they primarily control the Roku device (like a Roku Stick, Player, or Roku Smart TV). However, many Roku remotes, especially Voice Remotes, can be set up to control your TV’s power and volume via HDMI-CEC or infrared signals. Here’s how to connect or configure your Roku remote for your TV, depending on the remote type:
Identify Your Remote Type
Simple Remote, Infrared: No pairing button, controls Roku device only via IR, no TV control unless specified.
Voice Remote, Wireless: May have a pairing button, can control Roku and TV power/volume if compatible.
Steps to Connect Roku Remote to Control Your TV
These steps assume you have a Voice Remote with TV control features, common with Roku Smart TVs or enhanced remotes.
Ensure Roku Device is Set Up: Connect your Roku device (Stick, Player, or Smart TV) to your TV via HDMI and complete the initial setup. The Roku should be powered on and displaying the home screen.
Insert Batteries: Open the battery compartment on your Roku remote and insert fresh batteries, aligning them with the polarity markings.
Pair the Remote to the Roku Device (if Wireless):
If it has a pairing button (usually in the battery compartment or on the back), press and hold it for 5 seconds until the status light flashes green. Wait for an on-screen pairing confirmation, which may take up to 30 seconds.
If no pairing button, press and hold the Back and Home buttons together for 5 seconds until the light flashes, then wait for the prompt.
If already paired, skip this step—test by navigating the Roku menu.
Set Up TV Control:
On the Roku home screen, use the remote to go to Settings.
Select Remotes & Devices, then Remotes.
Choose your remote from the list, then select Set Up Remote for TV Control.
Follow the on-screen prompts: Roku will attempt to detect your TV brand by sending signals (e.g., muting the TV). Confirm when it works by selecting Yes when asked if you heard music or if the TV muted.
If automatic detection fails, manually select your TV brand from the list provided.
Test TV Controls: Once set up, use the power button on the Roku remote to turn the TV on/off and the volume buttons to adjust sound. These work via HDMI-CEC (if your TV supports it) or IR signals programmed during setup.
For Roku Smart TVs
If you’re using a Roku Smart TV, the remote is pre-configured to control both the Roku interface and TV functions (power, volume) out of the box. If it’s not working:
Restart the TV: Unplug it, wait 10 seconds, plug it back in, and test the remote.
Re-pair if needed using the pairing steps above.
