How to Fix Roku Remote Not Working or Pairing (Full Guide)
If your Roku remote isn’t working or pairing, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and fix the issue. The solution depends on whether you have a Roku Simple Remote, which uses infrared and doesn’t require pairing, or a Roku Voice Remote, which is wireless and needs pairing. Here’s how to address both scenarios:
For Roku Simple Remote, Infrared, No Pairing Button
This type uses infrared light and doesn’t need pairing, but it requires a clear line of sight to the Roku device.
Check the Batteries: Open the battery compartment on the back of the remote. Replace the batteries with fresh ones, ensuring they’re inserted correctly according to the polarity markings.
Test the Infrared Signal: Point the remote at a smartphone camera and press any button. If you see a flashing light through the camera, the remote is emitting a signal. If not, the remote may be defective.
Clear Obstacles: Ensure nothing blocks the path between the remote and the Roku device’s IR sensor, usually on the front. Move furniture, glass, or other objects if necessary.
Adjust Distance and Angle: Stand within 10-15 feet of the device and point the remote directly at it. Avoid extreme angles.
Restart the Roku Device: Unplug your Roku from power, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in. Once it restarts, test the remote again.
If it still doesn’t work, the remote might be faulty, and you’ll need a replacement compatible with your Roku model.
For Roku Voice Remote, Wireless, With or Without Pairing Button
This type connects via Wi-Fi and may need re-pairing if it stops working.
Check the Batteries: For remotes with removable batteries, replace them with new ones. For rechargeable models like Voice Remote Pro, plug it in to charge fully—check for a solid light indicating a full charge.
Restart the Roku Device: Unplug your Roku from power, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait until the home screen loads.
Re-Pair the Remote:
With a Pairing Button: The button is usually in the battery compartment or on the back. After the Roku restarts, press and hold the pairing button for 5 seconds until the status light flashes green. Wait up to 30 seconds for a pairing confirmation on-screen.
Without a Pairing Button: Press and hold the Back and Home buttons together for 5 seconds until the status light flashes. Wait for the on-screen prompt.
Reset the Remote: If pairing fails, reset it:
Remove batteries or for rechargeable models, ensure it’s charged, unplug the Roku, wait 5 seconds, then plug it back in.
Reinsert batteries or skip for rechargeable, then hold the pairing button for 20 seconds until the light flashes rapidly, indicating a reset. Try pairing again.
Check for Interference: Move the Roku device away from the TV’s HDMI port if it’s a streaming stick—HDMI interference can disrupt the signal. Roku offers a free HDMI extender; request one from their website with your device’s serial number.
Update Software: If the remote works intermittently, use another method like the Roku mobile app to navigate to Settings, System, System Update and check for updates.
