A video can be faded in and out with Premiere Pro using the standard film dissolve effect. The film dissolve effect is an easy method to fade a video in or out, with simple control. Film dissolve is added to a video layer by dragging the effect onto either end of the video. On longer videos it may be hard to see the effect box, zooming in on the timeline will make it easier to see and adjust the fade on your video.

The edge of the effect box can be dragged out to adjust the duration of the fade. Alternatively, the film dissolve settings in the “Effect Controls” panel can also be used to change the duration of the fade in or fade out. To change the settings you will need to select the corresponding effect.

A second option that can be used to fade in or fade out a video is opacity. Opacity controls how visible or transparent a layer is as a percentage. A low opacity will have the video be more transparent, and a high opacity allows the video to be seen more clearly.

The benefit of using opacity to fade a video in or out is that you get more control. To fade out opacity you will need to use keyframes. Fading in a video will have the opacity start at 0, and end in 100. Fading out a video will have the opacity set to 100, and end at 0. The keyframes can be set to ease in or ease out to provide a smoother transition.
