How to Install M.2 SSD on PS5 Console (Complete Tutorial)
Here's how to install an M.2 SSD in your PS5 console:
Preparation:
Select the Correct M.2 SSD:
Ensure the SSD meets Sony's specifications:
Type: PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD
Read Speed: At least 5,500MB/s
Capacity: 250GB to 8TB (though Sony officially supports up to 4TB for optimal performance)
Form Factor: M.2 2230/2242/2260/2280/22110
Heatsink: Must have a heatsink or you need to add one, with height restrictions (up to 8mm above the board, up to 2.45mm below).
Tools Needed:
#1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver
A well-lit workspace
Software Update:
Ensure your PS5 has the latest system software. Go to Settings - System- System Software - System Software Update and Settings - Update System Software.
Installation Process:
Power Down and Disconnect:
Completely power down your PS5 by holding down the power button until it shuts off, not just entering rest mode. Then unplug all cables from the console.
Discharge Static:
Touch a metal-grounded object to discharge any static electricity from your body to avoid damaging components.
Remove the PS5 Cover:
Lay your PS5 flat with the PS logo facing down and the power button facing away from you.
Gently lift the bottom right corner of the cover with your right hand and slide it to the left to remove it.
Access the Expansion Slot:
You'll see a long rectangular cover over the expansion slot. Remove the screw holding this cover in place and take off the cover.
Install the M.2 SSD:
Align the M.2 SSD with the slot, making sure the notch on the SSD matches with the slot's shape.
Slide the SSD into the slot at an angle (about 45 degrees) until it's fully seated, then gently press down until it's flat against the board.
Secure the SSD with the screw provided in the expansion slot, adjusting the screw's spacer to match the length of your SSD (if necessary).
Reassemble:
Replace the expansion slot cover and secure it with the screw.
Slide the console cover back into place until it clicks.
Power Up and Format:
Reconnect all cables, power on the PS5.
Navigate to Settings - Storage - M.2 SSD Storage. If it's your first time using the SSD, you'll need to format it. This will erase all data on the SSD, so ensure it's empty or contains no important data.
