How to Recover your PS4 Account with Backup Codes (Do This Now!)
3To turn on 2-Step Verification (2SV) for your PlayStation Network (PSN) account on your PS4, you'll need to navigate through your console's settings. 2SV adds an extra layer of security by requiring a verification code in addition to your password when you sign in.
Here's how to do it:
1. Access Account Management
From the PS4's home screen, go to Settings (the toolbox icon on the top bar).
Select Account Management.
2. Go to Account Information and Security
Choose Account Information. You might be prompted to enter your password again for security.
Select Security.
3. Enable 2-Step Verification
Select 2-Step Verification.
You'll be given the option to choose your preferred verification method:
Text Message (SMS): A code will be sent to your registered mobile number.
Authenticator App: You'll use an app like Google Authenticator or Microsoft Authenticator on your smartphone to generate codes.
Follow the on-screen prompts for your chosen method:
For Text Message: Enter your mobile phone number. A verification code will be sent to it. Enter this code into your PS4 to verify.
For Authenticator App: You'll see a QR code or an alphanumeric code. Open your authenticator app on your phone, scan the QR code (or manually enter the alphanumeric code), and then enter the generated code from the app into your PS4.
Once the verification code is entered and accepted, 2-Step Verification will be activated.
4. Record Your Backup Codes! 🔑
After successfully setting up 2SV, the system will provide you with backup codes. These are crucial!
Write these codes down and store them in a safe, secure place (not on your console or phone, in case you lose them both). Each code is single-use and can be used to sign in if you lose access to your phone or authenticator app.
If you ever use all your backup codes, you can generate new ones from the same "2-Step Verification" menu.
