How to Boost PS4 Performance & RUN FASTER!
As a PS4 ages, it's natural for its performance to decline. This can manifest as slower loading times, menu lag, frame rate drops in games, and even more frequent crashes. While you can't magically turn it into a PS5, there are several effective ways to boost its performance and make it run faster.
Here's a comprehensive guide:
1. Software Maintenance & Optimization
Rebuild Database (Essential): This is often the most impactful software fix. It defragments your hard drive, reorganizes its files, and can fix corrupted data that's slowing things down. It doesn't delete your games or save data.
Turn off your PS4 completely (hold the power button until it beeps twice and shuts down).
Enter Safe Mode: Press and hold the power button on the console. You'll hear one beep immediately. Continue holding for about seven seconds until you hear a second beep. Release the button.
Connect your DualShock 4 controller to the PS4 using a USB data cable and press the PS button.
From the Safe Mode menu, select Option 5: Rebuild Database.
Confirm the action and let the process complete. This can take a while depending on how much data you have.
Keep System Software Updated: Sony regularly releases system software updates that include performance improvements and bug fixes.
Go to Settings- System Software Update.
Install any available updates.
Free Up Storage Space: A nearly full hard drive significantly impacts performance.
Go to Settings - System Storage Management.
Check how much free space you have. Aim for at least 15-20% free space for optimal performance.
Delete games and applications you no longer play. Don't worry, your game saves are separate and won't be deleted. You can always re-download digital games later.
Delete old screenshots and video clips from your Capture Gallery.
Limit Content Items on Home Screen: Too many icons can sometimes cause menu sluggishness.
Go to Settings - System.
Check the box for "Limit Number of Content Items on Home Screen."
Clear Notifications: While minor, a very large backlog of notifications can sometimes contribute to menu lag. Go to your Notifications and clear them out.
Close Background Applications: If you have multiple applications or games suspended in the background, they consume resources.
Hold down the PS button on your controller.
Select Close Application for any idle apps or games.
Disable Automatic Downloads (if not actively used): While convenient, having the PS4 constantly checking for and downloading updates in the background can sometimes impact foreground performance, especially if your internet connection isn't top-tier.
Go to Settings - System -Automatic Downloads.
Consider unchecking "Application Update Files" or "System Software Update Files" if you prefer to manually manage when these occur (though it's usually best to keep system updates automatic for security).
