Steps to Remove and Replace Back & Front Cover with Custom Shell
Step 1: Prepare the Controller
Power off and clean:
Ensure the controller is turned off and disconnected from any charging cable.
Wipe with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust or oils.
Remove the battery cover and batteries:
Open the battery compartment on the back and remove the batteries or rechargeable battery pack.
Set up workspace:
Place a soft cloth or mat on a flat surface to prevent scratches.
Keep screws organized (use a small container or magnetic mat) to avoid losing them.
Step 2: Disassemble the Controller
Remove the screws:
Locate five T8 Torx screws:
One in the battery compartment (hidden under a sticker; puncture or lift the sticker to access).
Two in the top grips (near the bumpers, under the top plastic).
Two in the bottom grips (near the handles).
Use a T8 Torx screwdriver to carefully remove all five screws. Store them safely.
Pry off the side grips (back cover components):
Use a plastic spudger or pry tool to separate the side grips (the plastic pieces on the controller’s handles, part of the back cover).
Start near the triggers (LB/RB) and work along the seam to release the clips. The clips are tight, so apply steady, gentle pressure.
Tip: Press the trigger down and slide a thin pry tool or piece of cardboard into the gap to keep clips released. Be patient to avoid breaking clips or scratching the controller.
Once loosened, the side grips should pop off, exposing the internal frame.
Remove the top plastic plate (part of back cover):
Gently lift the top plastic piece (near the bumpers and triggers, connecting the side grips) to fully remove the back cover components.
Be cautious with the triggers and bumpers, as they may pop out. Note their position (e.g., how the springs sit) for reassembly.
Remove the front faceplate (front cover):
Flip the controller over and gently pull the front faceplate away from the controller body, starting near the triggers.
Work around the edges to release the clips. The faceplate should detach with a slight tug. If it resists, double-check for any remaining screws or clips.
Optional: If replacing buttons or thumbsticks, carefully lift the motherboard after unscrewing it (usually one or two additional screws). Disconnect ribbon cables by flipping up their locking tabs and sliding them out. Use tweezers for precision and take photos to remember cable placement.
