How to Save and Export After Effects Presets
After Effects allows you to save and export presets as a file on your computer. This allows you to backup your favorite presets in case you move to a new computer, or need to uninstall After Effects. It is recommended to backup presets onto an external hard drive or USB.
A preset can be saved by selecting the animation that you want to export, expanding the “Animation” menu, and choosing “Save Animation Preset”. Effects and other animations can all be saved as a preset. To save an animation with multiple effects or animations you will need to hold Ctrl (Command on a Mac) on your keyboard and click on each animation. You can also drag over all of the animations to select them all. In cases where there are a lot of effects needed to be selected for the preset, you can hold Shift and select the top and bottom effects.
When saving an After Effects preset you will have the ability to name the effect. It is best to give the preset a name to ensure you don’t forget what the effect does. The default location for the preset to save to is the After Effects user settings folder. For a preset to be visible in After Effects you will need the file to be located in this folder. These files can be copied to another drive or location for backup and sharing.
