How to Transfer Photos using USB Drive from 1 Phone to 2nd Phone (Android Tutorial)
Transferring photos between two Android phones using a USB flash drive involves two main steps: first, copying photos from the old phone to the USB drive, and second, copying photos from the USB drive to the new phone.
This process typically requires a USB On-The-Go (OTG) adapter or cable, which allows your Android phone to act as a host and connect directly to a standard USB drive. Some newer phones have USB-C ports and can use a USB-C flash drive or a simple USB-C to USB-A adapter.
Here is the step-by-step tutorial:
Part 1: Copy Photos from Old Phone to USB Drive
What You'll Need:
Your old Android phone.
A USB flash drive with enough space.
A USB OTG adapter (if your phone port and USB drive connector don't match, e.g., Micro-USB to USB-A, or USB-C to USB-A).
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Check OTG Compatibility (if unsure):
Most modern Android phones support USB OTG, but you can quickly search your phone model's specifications online to confirm.
Connect the USB Drive to the Old Phone:
Plug the USB drive into the OTG adapter (if needed), and then plug the adapter into your old phone's charging port.
If you have a USB-C phone and a USB-C drive, simply plug the drive in directly.
Access the USB Drive:
Your phone may display a notification that a USB drive is connected. Tap on this notification to open your file manager, or manually open your phone's File Manager app (it may be called My Files, Files by Google, or simply Files).
Allow any permissions requested to access the drive.
Locate and Select Photos on the Old Phone:
In your File Manager app, navigate to your phone's internal storage (or SD card, if applicable).
Photos taken with the camera are usually in the DCIM (Digital Camera Images) folder, then the Camera sub-folder.
Long-press on a photo or the folder (DCIM/Camera) to select it.
Tap to select any other photos or folders you wish to transfer. Most apps have a "Select All" option in the menu (three dots or lines).
Copy Photos to the USB Drive:
Look for the "Copy" or "Move" option in the menu.
Copy will keep the photos on your old phone and put a copy on the USB drive. (Recommended for safety).
Move will delete the photos from your old phone and transfer them to the USB drive (freeing up space).
After choosing Copy (or Move), navigate back to the main File Manager screen and select the USB Drive (it might be labeled as "USB Storage," "OTG," or the drive's brand name).
Choose a location on the USB drive, or create a new folder, and then tap "Paste," "Copy Here," or "Move Here" to start the transfer.
Safely Eject the USB Drive:
Once the transfer is complete, it is important to safely eject the drive to prevent data corruption.
Look for an "Eject" or "Safely Remove" icon next to the USB drive in your File Manager or in your phone's notification shade.
Once you see a message that the drive is safe to remove, physically unplug it from the phone.
