How to Turn On or OFF automatic Game or System Updates on PS4 Console
You want to control when your PS4 downloads and installs system software updates and game updates. This gives you more control over your data usage and ensures you're ready for an update when you want it, not when the console decides.
Here's how to turn off (or turn on) automatic game and system updates on your PS4:
1. Go to Settings
From the PS4 Home Screen, navigate to the top row of icons.
Scroll all the way to the right and select the "Settings" icon (it looks like a toolbox).
2. Navigate to System Settings
In the Settings menu, scroll down and select "System".
3. Access Automatic Downloads
Within the System menu, select "Automatic Downloads".
4. Control System Software and Application Updates
Here you'll find the options to manage both types of automatic updates:
To turn OFF automatic System Software Updates:
Uncheck the box next to "System Software Update Files".
What this does: Your PS4 will no longer automatically download new system software updates in the background or while in Rest Mode. You will still be notified when an update is available, and you can manually download and install it by going to Settings System Software Update.
To turn OFF automatic Application (Game) Updates:
Uncheck the box next to "Application Update Files".
What this does: Your PS4 will no longer automatically download and install updates for your games and applications. When an update is available for a game, the system will typically prompt you to download it when you try to launch that specific game. You can also manually check for game updates by highlighting a game on your Home screen, pressing the Options button, and selecting "Check for Update."
To Turn ON Automatic Updates:
If you previously turned these off and want to re-enable them, simply follow the same steps above and check the boxes next to "System Software Update Files" and/or "Application Update Files."
Additional Considerations (especially if you use Rest Mode):
Stay Connected to the Internet in Rest Mode: For any automatic downloads or updates (if enabled) to occur while your PS4 is in Rest Mode, you must ensure it's set to stay connected to the internet.
Go to Settings Power Saving Settings Set Features Available in Rest Mode.
Make sure "Stay Connected to the Internet" is checked.
Why you might turn off automatic updates:
Data Caps: If you have limited internet data, preventing large downloads can save you money.
Controlling Game Versions: Some players might want to stick to a specific game version for various reasons (e.g., to avoid a buggy update, or to continue using a particular exploit/glitch in single-player games).
Avoiding Forced Updates: You might want to delay updates until you're ready, perhaps to finish a game session without interruption.
