How to Play Music from USB drive on PS4 with Media Player
Yes, you can play music from a USB drive on your PS4 using the Media Player app. It's a straightforward process, but you need to ensure your USB drive and music files are compatible.
Here's how to do it:
1. Prepare Your USB Drive 💾
File System: The USB drive must be formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. PS4 will not read NTFS.
exFAT is recommended as it doesn't have the 4GB file size limit of FAT32, although this is less of an issue for individual music files.
How to Format on PC: Plug your USB drive into your computer. Right-click on the drive in File Explorer (Windows) or Finder (Mac), select "Format," and choose "exFAT" (or FAT32).
How to Format on PS4: Plug the USB into your PS4. Go to Settings Devices USB Storage Devices. Select your drive and choose "Format as exFAT." (Be aware: this will erase all data on the drive!)
Folder Structure: For the PS4 to properly recognize your music, you must place your music files inside a folder named "MUSIC" (all caps). This folder should be in the root directory of your USB drive.
Example: USB Drive MUSIC Your Song 1.mp3, Album Name Song 2.flac, etc.
2. Understand Supported Audio Formats 🎵
The PS4 Media Player supports several common audio formats:
MP3
FLAC
AAC (M4A)
If your music files are in other formats (e.g., WAV, WMA, OGG), you might need to convert them to one of the supported formats on your PC before transferring them. Many free audio converters are available online if you need to do this.
3. Transfer Music from PC to USB Drive 💻 ➡ ️ 💾
Plug your USB drive into your PC.
Create a folder on the root of the USB drive named "MUSIC" (all caps).
Copy your compatible music files (MP3, FLAC, AAC/M4A) from your PC into this "MUSIC" folder on the USB drive. You can organize them into sub-folders within "MUSIC" if you wish (e.g., MUSIC/Artist/Album).
Safely eject the USB drive from your PC.
4. Play Music on PS4 with Media Player 🎮 🎶
Insert the USB drive into any USB port on the front of your PS4.
Download/Launch the Media Player app:
If you don't have it, go to the PlayStation Store, search for "Media Player," and download it for free.
If you already have it, select Media Player from your PS4's Content Area (the main row of icons) or from your Library under "Applications."
The Media Player will automatically detect your connected USB storage device.
Select your USB drive from the list of detected devices.
Navigate to the "MUSIC" folder, and then browse through your sub-folders to find the songs or albums you want to play.
Select a song or album to start playback.
