How to Format USB Drive on PS4 Console to exFAT (Best Method)
4The PS4 console itself can format a USB drive to exFAT, which is the recommended file system for most PS4 uses, especially for storing game clips, screenshots, or backing up saved data. exFAT is superior to FAT32 because it doesn't have the 4GB file size limit, which is crucial for longer video captures.
Here's how to format a USB drive to exFAT directly on your PS4:
Important Note: Formatting a USB drive will erase ALL data on it. Make sure to back up any important files from the USB drive to a computer or cloud storage before proceeding.
Steps:
Plug your USB drive into your PS4. Insert it into one of the USB ports on the front of your console.
From the PS4's home screen, go up to the top row of icons and navigate to "Settings" (the toolbox/briefcase icon). Press X.
In the Settings menu, scroll down and select "Devices." Press X.
Choose "USB Storage Devices." Press X.
You should see your connected USB drive listed here. Select it. Press X.
On the next screen, you'll see options for your USB drive. Look for and select "Format as exFAT."
Note: If you were trying to set up an external hard drive for Extended Storage (to install games directly to it), you would select "Format as Extended Storage" instead. The PS4 will then automatically format it in its own optimized file system, which is a variation of exFAT. However, for general data transfer (videos, saves, backups), "Format as exFAT" is what you want.
A warning message will appear, stating that "This device will be formatted as exFAT. All data will be deleted from the USB stick."
Select "Format" and then "Yes" to confirm.
The PS4 will then proceed to format the drive. This usually takes only a few seconds or minutes, depending on the size of the drive.
Once completed, a notification will appear saying the device has been formatted. Select "OK."
