How to Disconnect PS4 Controller from PlayStation 4 (Best Method)
There are a few ways to "disconnect" a PS4 controller from your PlayStation 4, depending on what you're trying to achieve:
1. Simply Turn Off the Controller (Most Common):
If you just want to stop using the controller and save battery, the simplest way is to turn it off.
Hold down the PS Button: Press and hold the PlayStation (PS) button in the center of your controller for about 10 seconds.
The light bar on the controller will eventually turn off, indicating that the controller has powered down.
2. Disconnect a Controller (Without Forgetting its Pairing):
This is useful if you want to temporarily disconnect a controller without having to re-pair it later. It will still be recognized by the PS4, but won't be actively connected. You'll need another input method (another controller, the PS4 Second Screen app, or a USB keyboard/mouse) to do this.
On your PS4, go to the Home Screen.
Navigate to "Settings" (the toolbox icon on the top row).
Scroll down and select "Devices".
Select "Bluetooth Devices".
You'll see a list of all Bluetooth devices. Find the controller you want to disconnect.
Select the controller (it will have a green dot next to it if it's currently connected).
Press the "X" button to select it.
You should see an option to "Disconnect". Select it.
The controller will turn off, but remain listed in your Bluetooth devices for easy reconnection later by pressing the PS button on the controller.
3. "Forget Device" (Unpair Completely):
This is what you do if you want the PS4 to completely forget the controller, as if it's a brand new device. This is necessary if you're experiencing persistent connection issues with that specific controller or if you plan to connect it to a different console or device (like a PC or smartphone) and want to ensure it doesn't try to connect to your PS4.
Important: You must use a different input method (another controller, PS4 Second Screen app, or USB keyboard/mouse) to perform this action, as you're trying to forget the controller you'd otherwise be using.
On your PS4, go to the Home Screen.
Navigate to "Settings" (the toolbox icon on the top row).
Scroll down and select "Devices".
Select "Bluetooth Devices".
Find the controller you want to forget in the list.
Select the controller (even if it's already disconnected).
Press the "Options" button on your working controller (or the corresponding button/action on your chosen input method).
Select "Forget Device" from the pop-up menu.
Confirm your choice when prompted.
