How to Fix PS4 Controllers Buttons Not Working without Opening (Best Method)
When the buttons on your PS4 controller stop working without opening it, it's usually due to a software glitch, connection issue, or debris getting stuck. Opening the controller can void the warranty and is a bit involved, so it's best to try these non-invasive fixes first:
1. Perform a Hard Reset on the Controller (Most Effective First Step)
This is the go-to solution for many controller issues as it resets the controller's internal settings.
Turn off your PS4 completely. Do not put it in Rest Mode. Unplug it from the power outlet for a minute if you want to be extra thorough.
Locate the reset button: On the back of your DualShock 4, near the L2 shoulder button, there's a tiny, recessed hole.
Insert a small, pointed, non-metallic object (like a straightened paperclip, toothpick, or SIM ejector tool) into the hole.
Press and hold the button for at least 5 seconds. You'll feel a small click.
Release the button.
Reconnect the controller to your PS4: Use a known good, data-transferring USB cable (not just a charging-only cable). Plug it into a USB port on the front of your PS4.
Turn on your PS4 (you can do this by pressing the power button on the console).
Press the PS button on your controller. It should now pair and function normally.
2. Restart Your PS4 Console (Power Cycle)
A simple console restart can often clear temporary software glitches that affect controller communication.
Turn off your PS4 completely (hold the power button on the console until it beeps twice and shuts down).
Unplug the power cable from the back of the PS4.
Wait for at least 30 seconds to 1 minute.
Plug the power cable back in and turn on your PS4.
Once the PS4 is on, connect your controller via USB cable and press the PS button to try pairing.
3. Check and Replace USB Cable / Port
Faulty Cable: Some USB cables are for charging only and don't transmit data, which is essential for pairing and sometimes for stable wired use. Try a different USB cable you know works for data transfer (e.g., the one that came with your phone).
Faulty USB Port: Try plugging the controller into a different USB port on your PS4. One of the ports might be malfunctioning.
