How to Turn On or OFF TV with Firestick Remote (Easy Method)
To turn your TV on or off with your Firestick remote, you need a Firestick remote with a power button (like the Alexa Voice Remote included with Firestick 4K or later models) and a TV that supports HDMI-CEC. Here’s how to set it up or disable it:
Step 1: Check Prerequisites
Remote: Ensure your Firestick remote has a power button (a circle with a vertical line, usually at the top). Older models without this button can’t control TV power.
TV Compatibility: Your TV must support HDMI-CEC (e.g., Samsung: Anynet+, LG: SimpLink, Sony: Bravia Sync). Most modern TVs do.
Step 2: Enable HDMI-CEC on Your TV
Go to your TV’s settings menu using your TV remote.
Look for an HDMI-CEC option—it’s often under System, Inputs, or General settings.
Turn it on. This lets the Firestick communicate with your TV over HDMI.
Plug your Firestick into an HDMI port (ideally one labeled for CEC, if marked).
Step 3: Sync the Firestick Remote to Control TV Power
Turn on your TV and Firestick.
On the Firestick home screen, go to Settings (gear icon at the top).
Select Equipment Control.
Choose Manage Equipment, then TV.
Select Change TV or Set Up TV if it’s your first time.
The Firestick will try to detect your TV brand:
If correct, select Yes.
If not, select No and manually pick your TV’s brand (e.g., Vizio, TCL, Panasonic).
Press the Power button on your Firestick remote when prompted.
If the TV turns off, wait 10 seconds, then press Power again to turn it back on.
Confirm with Yes if it worked, or No to try another IR profile until it does.
Save the settings by selecting Next or OK.
Step 4: Test It
Press the Power button on your Firestick remote:
If synced, it’ll turn your TV off when it’s on, or on when it’s off (assuming the Firestick is powered and the TV supports CEC wake-up).
If it also controls volume, that’s a bonus—full setup often includes both.
To Turn OFF TV Power Control (Disable It)
Go back to Settings, Equipment Control, Manage Equipment on your Firestick.
Select TV, then Change TV.
Choose Do Not Control TV or reset to a dummy profile (e.g., select a random brand and don’t confirm it works).
Alternatively, disable HDMI-CEC on your TV’s settings menu to stop all CEC control, though this affects other devices too.
