About this video: This video is our step-by-step guide on how to update your Minecraft Server to the newest version Minecraft has to offer. No matter what kind of server you have, this video will show you how to update it. Thus, if you want to learn how to update a Spigot server, Forge server, Bukkit server or Paper server, this video will show you exactly how to do it!
First things first, you will need to set up a new server on the version you are updating to. For example, if you are upgrading your server from 1.13.2 to 1.14, you will need to start a 1.14 server before you can upgrade. Once you have two servers once running 1.13.2, your old server, and one running 1.14, your new server, we can start upgrading your Minecraft server. If you need to see how to make a Minecraft server, there is a link in the description above to help you out!
Once you have both servers setup, we can start transferring. This is very simple. Start by deleting everything in your new server except the .jar file and your run.bat file if you are running the server locally. Then, take and copy everything from your old server into this new server except for the .jar file and the run.bat file. Make sure you COPY these and do not just drag and drop. By copying them, you are backing up your Minecraft server. Thus, if something does mess-up in this process, you will automatically be able to start the old server back up and nothing will be lost.
At this point though, you can go ahead and start your new, updated server. At this point, it will load your world up, get your player data, and be ready to go! You can join the server in game, and you should spawn exactly where you were before the server updated. Additionally, you will still be OP'd, in the same gamemode, and have the same items in your inventory. If you don't, make sure you are transfering everything over to your new server including the player files.
