So, without anymore delay, here is how to update a server to 1.18.1 in Minecraft!
First things first, we assume you already have a Minecraft server. If not, there is reason to update your server. Thus, you can just start a new Minecraft server using the link in the tutorial above. You can then add worlds to do it and do anything that you want.
However, if you do have a server setup already, we can move on to updating it. The first part of this process is backing it up. Things can and will break with you update a Minecraft server to 1.18.1 as the world has to generate all kinds of new blocks under the existing world. This is awesome because of all the features 1.18.1 adds, but it does mean things break more frequently. Because of this, we need to update to back to server up. This is actually very easy. Just right click on the folder your Minecraft server is hosted in, click ‘Copy’. Then, right-click on your desktop, and click ‘Paste’. You will now have a copy of your Minecraft server that you can revert back to if something goes wrong during the update.
With your server backed up, we can move to downloading the Minecraft 1.18.1 server file. You can find a link to a website with all the Minecraft server versions on it. Once you are there, click the download button next to the 1.18.1 version. Then, click the ‘Download Server Jar’ button. The Minecraft 1.18.1 server.jar file will the download. You may need to keep or save this file depending on your browser.
After you have the server.jar downloaded, we need to open up your Minecraft server folder and delete the server.jar that is in. Then, drag-and-drop the new server.jar you downloaded into your server folder. You have now updated the server.jar to the Minecraft 1.18.1 version. You aren’t completely finished though. You still need to launch your server. Luckily, this is exactly the same as before. Double click on the server.jar or your run.bat file. Your Minecraft server will now open up in versions 1.18.1. On first launch, it may take a significant amount of time as it regenerates your world.
