I Designed & Made A Custom Charging Dock for the Nintendo Switch Lite!
Do you have hobbies that help you when working on other hobbies? I do! My experience in soldering from radio controlled hobbies has helped me over the years in repairing and modding video game systems, for example. And more recently, 3D printing has really helped me to develop new solutions to problems when it comes to modern and retro gaming. From display stands, replacement parts, region-free mods, and more, my Bambu Labs P1P, P1S, and Creality K1 have really been invaluable. My youngest daughter just got a Switch Lite for Christmas, and she doesn't quite get the idea of plugging in charging cables. So I turned to 3D printing to help me design a charging solution that she can use and display her new console.
I started by looking on Bambu Lab's Makersworld repository to see if there were any existing files I might like, and I did find one that resembled a standard Switch Dock. Now, I have to put this disclaimer out here, the idea was NOT to connect the Switch Lite to a TV, I was JUST looking for a charging solution. That being said, I printed the file and, well, it was ok but not great. I do not like having to glue pieces together that I print. The default version of this file required that. I took the file and threw it into Tinkercad and got to work.
I started by redoing the way the halves fit together, this way they actually had a pressure fit. I also decided to personalize the face of it and add "Lite" to the face, as the original only said "Nintendo Switch". I printed this, and started studying it a little further.
The T in "Lite" didn't print well, and the pressure fit didn't hold the halves together quite like I wanted, so I added some retaining clips to keep the halves together without glue. I also enlarged both my daughter's name and the Lite, and printed a final version. This is why I Designed & Made A Custom Charging Dock for the Nintendo Switch Lite!
Overall, I love how this turned out, and I might offer both personalized and non-personalized versions for sale on my website, https://roxolid-productions.square.site/. Let me know if you'd be interested on one!
