Kerbal Space Program version 1.0 is here, and it brings a lot of changes to the game. One of the biggest changes is how the atmosphere is modeled, including aerodynamic effects, proper drag and blocking of the air stream by fairings and cargo bays, and re-entry and frictional heating, including heat shields.

With so many changes to the atmosphere, I thought it would be wise to run a few tests to see how these changes will effect rockets and aircraft in KSP. It looks like, for the most part, if you build realistic ships with proper nose cones and use the new fairings, then you wan't have much trouble reaching orbit or returning. However, you you have a lot of weak parts exposed to the air stream, or come in particularly fast, say on return for Jool, then you may have to be careful how you enter the atmosphere.

This video was put together in about 12 hours after the 1.0 release from about 3 hours of testing in game. Some of this may change with updates to the game, but this should be a good look at the changes to the atmosphere in the new version of Kerbal Space Program.
