Kerbal Space Program 1.0 Scenarios 2
I'm continuing to look at the Scenarios in the newly released Kerbal Space Program 1.0. In this video I play the 'Asteroid Redirect Mission: Ready to Capture' and 'EVA in Kerbin Orbit' Scenarios.
The 'Asteroid Redirect Mission: Ready to Capture' mission has your rocket just a few meters off the side of an asteroid, ready to dock with it. You are tasked with docking with in, and the bringing it into orbit around the Mun. One twist with this mission, is you are outside of Kerbin's influence, orbiting the Sun.
I dock relative easily with the asteroid using RCS thrusters, making sure to line up with it's center of gravity. I then plan a burn to get an intercept with Kerbin. After some adjustments, I get a burn of about 115 m/s that will have us intercept in 299 days.
Starting the burn, this rocaket seems to have the same issue as the previous scenario, where the fuel lines don't appear to be working, and manual fuel transfers are needed to keep the engines running. We get the burn done, and then time warp almost to the encounter with Kerbin. Once we are in Kerbin's influence, it become obvious that we are coming in under Kerbin, so we need to change our approach to have an intercept with the Mun.
We plan a big burn of about 540 m.s to change our inclination to a more equatorial one, that has a Munar intercept. We perform this two and a half minute burn, and get on our way to the Mun. With this burn's length, we begin to have overheating issues, so several times I stop burning to let the engine cool. Good thing the intercept is 16 days away, so we don't have to be too exact! We wind up finishing the burn 18 minutes after we started in, instead of the 3 minutes we expected leaving us with a little under 1/3 of our fuel left.
Just before the Mun intercept, we make a correction burn of about 50 m/s to get our orbit around the Mun to be close to equatorial. Now in the Mun influence we plan a burn to get into orbit. This turns out to be about 200 m/s and we only have 425 units of fuel left, about 1/4 of our initial fuel.
We perform the burn, but for some reason, the SAS isn't holding the target this time. Se stop the burn and get on the target again, and use RCS to help our SAS hold position. We manually refuel the tanks one last time, and continue the burn. We complete the burn, not a circular as we would like, but we do get the asteroid in orbit, and we have 87 units of fuel left!
I then do the 'EVA in Kerbin' orbit Scenario. This tasks you with getting Jeb under control during an EVA and getting him back to the rocket that is about 40 meters away.
This doesn't turn out to be too hard, so noticing that KSC us coming up, I attempt to land there this orbit. My first attempt doesn't go well as my attempt to start the ship's engine actually decouples them, trapping the guys in orbit!
I try again, this time manually activating the engine once Jeb is aboard. Thrusting at maximum to slow down, we run out of fuel just as our path is getting close to KSC. We decouple the engine as we enter the atmosphere. As we slow due to drag, our path gets closer to KSC. We begin to get re-entry heating, but nothing on the rocket overheats. We wind up landing in the water just north of KSC, apparently our aim was slightly off. We pop the parachutes at 3 km, and land safely!
