Kerbal Space Program First Contract 10
I'm continuing the Mission to Minmus in Kerbal Space Program First Contract!
Were in orbit around Minmus, but we need to lower our orbit to get the 'low orbit' science over the various biomes. So we plan two burn that will do that, and we carry them out. We then attempt to get the science over the various biomes. We attempt to get science over the 'poles' biome, but we apparently don't travel over it. So we adjust our inclination to attempt to get over the poles, but apparently our first attempt doesn't go far enough. Our second attempt works though, and we get an EVA report over the poles.
From there, we plan to land on a flat ice sheet, as there are at a known altitude: 0. We do our burn, and down, and the stop our horizontal travel at about 10 km over the surface and fall straight down. At 3 km over the surface, we use our orbit stage to slow us does to a reasonable speed, and then detach it as it doesn't have the landing legs. Too bad is was still more than 1/2 full, but the ship was purposefully overbuilt in case an issues came up in flight. We are able to land without much trouble and only using a little bit of your fuel in the lander.
We then gather all the science we can, and even travel by rocket pack about 2 km to the 'slopes' biome for some extra science. We return all the science to the ship, and not that we seem to have enough fuel to attempt to hop to another biome. A near by but different flats seems like the best candidate, so we head there.
There we have an even safer (slower) landing and gather all the science we can. When we are done, it is time to head back to Kerbin. So we blast off, and attempt to get an orbit, but we notice that we are in a good position to just attempt to go directly for an escape trajectory. We do achieve escape, but our resulting return path is a bit 'wonky', so we perform a slight correction burn. This puts on a path to hit Kerbin's atmosphere, but not too deeply so that we can orbit Kerbin once if needed to get closer to KSC for a better recovery bonus.
that turns out to to be necessary as we end up very close to KSC, and we end up passing it as we attempt to slow down. We don't burn all our fuel so that we have some left to slow our final splashdown in the ocean. With the help of the engines, we do splashdown without issue at less than 3 m/s.
This mission successfully returned over 1600 science points. Next time we will see what the boys in R&D can do with all that science and plan our our next missions!
