Back with some more Kerbal Space Program!

Having returned from Minmus with a lot of science in the last episode, in this episode we unlock a lot of new parts! We then look at some new contracts that we can take, and get to work on a new mission.

I did say last time that we would do a mission to the Mun, but there are a lot of relatively easy contracts we can finish in orbit with a specifically built ship. This will allow us to test the parts that we've unlocked and hopefully get a better idea of what will go into our Mun ship.

This rocket will be testing the 1x2 liquid booster in orbit as well as the LV-1 and LV-1R engines, the small gear bay, and the large decoupler. Before launch, we will also be testing the the hydraulic manifold, for a total of 6 contracts in one mission!

The ship is designed so that it should be able to lift the 1x2 liquid booster into orbit without using it at all, so that we can stage to it to fulfill the contract. We are using 4 mainsail engines with 2 large orange fuel tanks each, and 8 and the large NASA solid boosters for help getting off the ground.

Liftoff goes well, and we pick up enough speed so that we can throttle back to 50% until the solids run out. Once they do, however, we run into issues. The decoupler doesn't move them away with much force, and way force it applies is off center, so the top of the solid boosters hit the orange tanks they are attached to, and causes them to explode! We reach about 14.5 km, and begin to fall, at which point we activate the 1x2 booster in order to attempt to land safely. It turns out to be incredibly powerful for the small remaining payload, and we attempt to see if reaching space is possible.

It turns out to be possible, and we make it into orbit with a small amount of fuel remaining. This turn out to be enough to allow us to still test the engine using the run test button, and fulfill the contract! Since we are in orbit, we can also complete the rest of the contracts as well. We do so, and return to Kerbin just 16 km from KSC with a bit more than 300 science.

So, nothing went to plan, and we lost most of the ship, but we were able to complete all the contracts that we set out to do. Our overbuilding of the skip paid off, but we will have to be more careful with large boosters in the future.
