3You may expect this to be one of the hardest levels in the game to get the fastest time in, due to all the obstacles that you encounter when flying. However, there's a _*super*_ easy way to bypass everything if you simply hold the B and C buttons before the level loads, you will flip up to the ceiling and just hover across pretty much the entire level. Just be sure to use some invulnerability to avoid hitting the first fireball.
As long as you know exactly where to flip downwards from here to get to the flag, you won't hit anything. The way I gauge when to flip is I flip exactly at the fourth foreground crossbeam I encounter after passing the second fireball. This should thread yourself through the platforms without losing any horizontal speed.
Easy so far? Well, let me tell you this: the lowest possible time in which to complete this level is on the _*last*_ frame to which the clock reads 2:52. So in other words, what you see here is also the max time a TAS can get! In order to properly explain how hard this is, I need to explain one of Skycutter's quirks:
Every time you land on the ground, bounce on enemies, go off a ledge, or duck while right-side up as Skycutter, the game stops you for one frame. It is odd because doing any of this while upside-down does not result in any frame loss. I pretty much ignored this consideration in previous levels, but levels like this and The Valley of Life require that you take this factor into consideration.
Due to the fact that no errors can be made, the flag at the end must be touched from the left side, not the top side, simply because touching the flag there is faster due to horizontal progression. With the above consideration on Skycutter's properties, this means that you need to flip right side up to fall towards the flag early enough to touch it from the left, but late enough so that you do not land on the last tall platform. Simply landing on it will cause you to lose two frames, and get a 2:51. It really is this final action that makes a 2:52 on this level quite elusive. The only other time I've seen a 2:52 done on Sinister Sewers is in a TAS, so as far as I know, this makes world record both time-wise and score-wise.
