Let’s Play BG2 EE #131: The Dangers of Unrestrained Curiosity
Curiosity is a powerful driving force. We seek to understand the world around us and it is curiosity which fuels that desire, the foundation upon which our quest for discovery is built upon. Most great scientific achievements began as people wondering why something works the way it does, doesn’t work the way they think it should or could work provided they create the right situation for it to work. Explorers are driven by the curiosity of just what’s beyond the horizon, chefs seek to discover new and wonderful flavour combinations and the list goes on and on and on.
The world of D&D is little different in that regard to our own save that magic is a real and tangible thing. Scholars seek to create new and powerful spells, craft unique and mighty magical objects and forge traps fuelled by the arcane or divine might they wield. Many are the potential rewards for such curiosity driven experimentation, but it is not without risk. Many in our world lost their lives in pursuit of knowledge and the same applies in D&D but especially for spellcasters. One wrong incantation, a mismatched amount of ingredients or the improper hand gesture can spell disaster the likes of which you cannot even begin to imagine, leaving nothing but a smoking pile of ash if the caster is lucky. What should you be more afraid of though: powerful magic that’s gone wrong or powerful magic that’s gone right?
With this in mind, you need to be doubly careful when exploring around ancient, dangerous places in D&D, for who knows what long-forgotten magical fail safe lies dormant within the dusty dungeon you’re exploring? That strange device on the table could be nothing, but it could also be a terrifying artefact of an age past which will unleash all its terrors upon you if you pick it up. The adventurers who learn to temper their curiosity are the ones who are more likely to live to a ripe old age, for their first instinct isn’t to poke about at things they don’t understand. Better to be safe than sorry, after all.
