While a party in D&D gets stronger with every level they gain and each piece of equipment they improve, this accumulation of might is gradual and matched by ever-more difficult challenges. The stakes get higher, the tactics of the opponents become more complicated, the traps more fiendish and the locations of the dungeons more treacherous. This ensures that the players always feel challenged no matter what level they are, often building up to an epic final confrontation that the bards will sing of for ages to come.

The one downside of this is that you sometimes don’t realise just how powerful your characters have become. Fortunately, a good campaign will have moments that reveal to the players just how far they’ve come and this often is done by presenting them with something they’ve done once before. Be it a foe that was considered a huge threat at the time, a very difficult trap or an obstacle to be overcome, the party easily emerging victorious – there’s always a chance they won’t, but it’ll be very slim – brings out an eye-opening moment that’s always a joy to see as a DM and to experience as a player.

You may be wondering why I’m talking about this in this video. Let’s just say I’ve been long overdue for that realisation in this let’s play.
