Let’s Play HC Minecraft Take Three #16: Building the Portal to the Beyond
The seed for the world is -4530229098322994391 (Java Edition). Please refrain from posting spoilers about the seed, including the location of desirable resources and locations of interest.
You may think all the construction work is finished, but there’s one room that’s missing the thing which gives it purpose: the portal room. Secured by an iron door and locked from the inside by a stone button that mobs can’t manipulate, that room will contain the portal which the Avatar will use to access the Nether, a dangerous dimension full of lava, fire and monsters more terrifying than any we’ve faced on the overworld.
We can’t get there until we assemble the portal however and it’s made out of obsidian. Obsidian is typically made by pouring water over blocks of lava and, as lava is finite, you’d presume that obsidian is also. This is not the case, though the methods of farming it are not entirely straightforward and not possible without first making a portal – at least as far as I know – and for that we need at least ten pieces of obsidian.
We could make them using bucket to transport lava into a mould that we slowly fill using water, but that’s either a very slow process or one that needs far more buckets than I have, so it’s off into the mine the Avatar goes to harvest obsidian using the diamond pickaxe we recently made. We’ll be in and out of there before we know it and there’s no chance we’ll get lost at all. None at all. Nope.
