Let’s Play HC Minecraft Take Three #17: Nether Underestimate the Nether

The Nether is a very dangerous place that doesn’t obey the same rules that the overworld does. Water can’t be placed anywhere, lava flows much faster and trying to sleep in a bed makes it explode. The Nether has no weather or a day/night cycle and, as your spawn point is beyond the Nether, the compass can’t locate it. The whole place has a dim ambient light about it, as well as endless seas of lava which I wouldn’t advice falling into. Add to that all the mobs unique to the Nether which require different strategies to defeat compared to overworld mobs and I wouldn’t blame you for wondering why you’d want to go there in the first place.
The Nether is full of danger but so too does it contain rewards that can only be found there. Netherrack is a block that’s easy to mine and burns forever, glowstone can be turned into block-sized lanterns which are powered by redstone and soulsand is great for slowing down enemies. It’s also used to grow nether warts, a resource essential for brewing potions with a brewing stand. The stand itself can only be made using a blaze rod, a resource dropped by blazes which can only be found in the Nether. Blaze rods are also be broken down into blaze powder which powers the brewing stand as well as being used in the creation of other things that we may get around to using much later.
Suffice to say, the Nether is worth the risk to explore, but never do so until you’re ready. You’ll need decent armour, a lot of arrows, good food, stone to make bridges that can’t be easily destroyed and a flint and steel, just in case.
