Let’s Play INSIDE #06: Solving Puzzles with a Bang
140This is a blind playthrough of the game. As such, please avoid posting puzzle solutions or plot spoilers, so as to not spoil the experience for me or other viewers who haven’t played the game.
The mind control helmet thingy being stuck to our head would be an unfortunate thing in any other game, but I won’t say no to being able to control the many nameless people that otherwise slouch in torpor, for I need them to solve this puzzle. I’m no closer to figuring out what’s going on with them, but I’m reasonably confident that the game will provide me some clues as we progress further through. I say reasonably because while the game has been very reluctant to dispense even a glimmer of information, something as important as that is bound to get explained eventually, right? Right?
While each area has had a slew of the more generic puzzles we’re used to by now, they also have a main focus which serves as the centrepiece for that section of the game. Often starting off as a minor thing, it’s built upon piece by piece but never gets too complicated, in part because of how gently you’re eased into each problem. Even if the player could solve each small step required to solve the much larger puzzle, presenting the whole thing to them right away will overwhelm most people, doubly so if there’s a time limit imposed on its completion. Introducing things slowly and piece-mail is good design, ensuring that the player has an easier time of figuring things out, resulting is less frustration. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t throw the odd curveball at them now and again but when you do, ensure that they can quickly realise what they need to do so that it doesn’t shift from a clever trick to a roadblock.
