Let’s Play Ultima IX #03: Hitting the Ground… Sleeping?
When we last left the Avatar, he had defeated the titans of Pagan, sealing away their influence on the island and usurping their worshippers and power. Now the titan of magic, his might was enough to escape from that world and return to Britannia with all haste, seeking to save it from the machinations of the Guardian, his nemesis. Unfortunately it seemed that the Avatar was too late to stop the invasion, appearing back on Britannia before a monolith dedicated to the Guardian and his rule. All is not lost however for now the Avatar was back, ready to lead those willing to fight for their freedom in the final battle for the world’s future.
Ultima VIII had a powerful ending, painting a grim picture for its sequel and building up a lot of excitement for the epic struggle that was to come. Unfortunately, Ultima IX not only doesn’t capitalise on that by starting off exactly where Pagan left off, but it totally forgets that ending occurred at all, doing something completely different instead that makes no sense considering the story so far. While newcomers to the series – people who probably shouldn’t have picked the last game in the series as their starting point – won’t realise what has happened, those who’ve played the others are immediately hit with confusion that’s quickly followed by more confusion.
Disappointing beginning or not, we have a tutorial to start, so let’s not keep the game waiting.
