Let's Play The Banner Saga [Part 31] - Sigbjorn

And now for more gameplay from Unpronounceable Names-- I mean, The Banner Saga. The last part of the LP left off on a bit of cliff hanger. Rook and company arrived at some village whose name I can't remember, and found it was a desolate place filled with Dredge. Yeah, I know, same old story we've heard a million times before, but this time there was a drunken red Varl fighting them off at a mead house or a longhouse or something. And then the episode ended because I keep a timer now.

Today we're back to that fateful encountering, heading forward and forging our own storyline throuhg choice and consequence, as long as our own storyline is the exact same as one of the limited narrative permutations that the designers of The Banner Saga chose to implement because there's no great way to implement narrative choice right now. Wow, that was a run on sentence. So where was I? Oh yeah, all the talking about narrative choice and the story of The Banner Saga is kind of for naught. This episode is largely composed of a combat encounter.

That's right folks who subscribe to the belief that there exists a dichotomy between gameplay and story, or as I like to call you, gameplay-story dualists (Descartes is spinning in his grave), it's time for combat. Now I can't remember if we had any of The Banner Saga's sweet, sweet tactical turn based combat last episode and I'm too lazy to check, but it matters not, for we will experience the divine sensation of gameplay together and now!

Also, we get to meet the red Varl, whose name is Sigbjorn. He's level 5 already, which is ridiculous, and he's carrying a sweet item that we can take off him and equip on one of our own units. But wait, there's more! After rescuing him and helping him dispose of those Dredge, he joins us, gives us a bunch of mead, and also gives us another sweet item. The Banner Saga sure knows how to give you gameplay rewards for doing the right thing.
