One thing this game is quickly reminding of is just how relentless your foes can be. Whether they are surrounding you, popping out from hidden alcoves or teleporting in from inaccessible monster closets beyond the bounds of the map, you’ll find yourself barely having a moment to breathe upon entering a new area (or when you retreat back to an old area, if the game is really feeling sneaky). The flow of opponents is naturally much less on lower difficulties, made easier by the increased ammunition you get in some of them.

Then there’s the archvile. An opponent capable of dealing substantial damage blocked only by line of sight, the true danger they pose is the ability to raise fallen opponents so they can fight again. Left to their own devices, they can quickly repopulate a cleared areas with foes you’ll have to defeat again with no extra ammo to see it done. Eliminating free roaming archviles should be your number one priority but don’t be reckless when trying to do so; they rarely appear alone and are tanky enough to get a few hits off on you if you’re not careful. Fortunately there are three exceptions to their ability to ressurect enemies: Cyberdemons, spider masterminds and other archviles, the final one is something I’m forever grateful for.
