282At the start of the game you aren’t yet the leader of your chosen faction, but a promising warrior with a small but stalwart group of soldiers at your command. The lands of your home are filled with outposts of marauders that have made walking abroad a perilous prospect. While your ultimate goal in the early game is to liberate the great temple of your faction to earn the respect and trust of the people, your initial forces aren’t up to the task at the beginning. You need some battles under your belt and that’s where the marauders come in.
While you can hire mercenaries to bolster your ranks or replace lost units, their maintenance cost is very high even once you have your economy set up. Your initial units don’t cost your any upkeep until you’ve liberated the great temple so you should do what you can to keep them alive. Take the time to rest in structures and heal up your units when they sustain damage and don’t take any huge risks at this point.
