171A playthrough of "Mount Pain" (Map27) of Final Doom: TNT Evilution for PC, played through GLBoom-plus. 100% kills, 100% secrets (Max-Kill).
I honestly wanted to name this title "Mount Go-Fuck-Yourself" because that's seriously what this map can do. Hitscan enemies by the bucketloads in ridiculously overscaled areas, little health, lots of poisonous areas, and several lethal traps.
Yeah. It's the toughest map TNT has to throw at you. Playing safe is almost a must, but the map forces you to do everything BUT play safe. There aren't many places to hide, you can be sniped at from EVERYWHERE at any point, and the sheer number of enemies makes you constantly check over your shoulder to keep from being sniped and picked apart.
Everything comes to a head at the end of the map, where it's almost as if it's a conglomerate of your worst nightmares. Chaingunners and Revenants in the absolute biggest space possible, combined with TONS of Lost Souls, and a few Cacodemons to keep you on your toes. This is where the ridiculous overscaling comes in as the biggest obstacle you see in the map. It's not fun being picked apart from such a ridiculous distance by a Chaingunner, especially when you are separated from your health by a damage floor in the previous room (to get the Yellow Key). Ah, but finally clearing this out isn't the end as you have a wide open area with 2 Revenants, 1 Mancubus, 1 Arch-Vile, and 1 Chaingunner. It's the biggest cockslap to the face you'll see in TNT, as far as difficulty goes.
The whole map feels designed to give you a sense of an unfair challenge, what with minimal health in the map and the high number of hitscan enemies in overly scaled rooms of redundancy. The worst factors to this map are that it plays the worst music track in all of TNT, on top of the reminiscence of ugliness found in Map08, but maybe not to that extent.
If you can finish this map, thank your lucky stars, because it's (relatively) smooth sailing from here.
