Let's Play: The Plutonia Experiment - Map03 - Aztec
A playthrough of "Aztec" (Map03) of Final Doom: The Plutonia Experiment for PC, played through GLBoom-plus. 100% kills, 100% secrets (Max-Kill).
They're trying to kill you right at the start! If you turn and mess your angle up, you can fall into the pit in the start room, meaning you goofed. Past that, the map only needs two keys, both of them at the exit. It's a map of branching paths, both of which are filled with their own little horrors.
The Blue Key is definitely the worst spot in this map. Having a nice, wide open area with not one, but TWO Pain Elementals, accompanied by Revenants and Arachnotrons, it doesn't give you a break. You have to play your cards very carefully or you can be overwhelmed quite quickly and easily.
More advanced mapping techniques here, particularly the invisible platform that the Blue Key sits on. Not to mention the invisible bridge going to said key... it adds a whole unique feel to things the way the Casali Brothers used them. They always knew just where, when, and how to use them.
The Red Key is also well protected by two Chaingunners, a Baron, and an Arch-Vile, all inside a small opening (I wouldn't call it a room). This one can get you killed if you get trapped inside by the monsters that spawn in. As you know, Chaingunners in close-quarters is lethal. So are Arch-Viles when you have nowhere to hide.
It brings us back to the feel of Map01 with the brown brickwork and ivy growing on the walls, with the dark muddy waters. Feels like things are consistent for the moment. At points this is easier than the previous map, but don't let your guard down. We've only just begun to scratch the surface...
