Let's Play Yoshi's Island - Part 5: Intelligence is Relative
World 2 awaits, but it's not time to go there just yet...there is a bonus stage to take care of. In Yoshi's Island, each world has 8 normal stages - x-1 through x-8 - and one "Extra" stage. If you get a perfect score of 100 points on all 8 normal stages, it unlocks the Extra stage, plus an endless bonus for use if necessary. (Each world always has the same bonus, and each bonus is one of the ones obtained by hitting a flower in the goal roulette.)
One thing is unfortunately true for the Extra stages, though: They're a pain. I don't know if they're the six most annoying stages in the game...but they might just be six of the seven or eight most annoying stages in the game. Extra 1, Poochy Ain't Stupid, is no exception. It's another auto-*BLEEPING*-scroller, and the entire thing pretty much consists of riding Poochy (a dog that follows Yoshi around and can be ridden) while trying not to get squished by the screen, smacked by any dangers above, or dropped into one of the many pools of lava that line the bottom of this stage. What fun. Poochy can be rather annoying to handle, too...where's some bacon when you need it? I don't know why raocow has such a problem with Yoshi when there are blockheaded creatures like Poochy around. Challenging bonus stages are one thing, but challenging un-fun bonus stages are another; TVTropes hit it on the head when they said "I collected 160 red coins and 40 flowers for this?!".
At least getting a perfect score on a world isn't a total loss, though...you do get the bonus stage. World 1's is Flip Cards, which consists of 8 cards that each have a picture of an item, a Toady, or Kamek under them. If you uncover Kamek, you lose all items you have collected and automatically quit the game. If you uncover a Toady, you get to keep playing but don't get an item. If you uncover an item, you can either keep playing or quit and keep all items you have earned so far.
That's everything in World 1, in any case. I'm not bothering to get perfect scores on the Extras; I did it at least once on the console, and I ain't doin' it again.
