Let’s Replay Doom II #19: Belated Invulnerability
147If there’s one thing that I can point to and say is a definite flaw in my play style, it’s that I don’t take advantage of power-ups when I should. Much like potions in RPGs and other consumables, I am wary of using them when they’re presented to me as I always presume that there’ll be a better time later when I can take advantage of them which is rarely the case. That I end a level with some power ups spare is a sign that I can manage without them but I’d probably be doing better if I used them at the time.
Not finding them until after the best time to use them is another matter, as I tend to play defensively when presented with large groups of enemies. I prefer to use choke points and cover to my benefit, waiting for my foes to come to me where I can dispatch them easily and a few at a time. The discovery of an invulnerability sphere when it’s all over is something to smile at, whereupon it then doesn’t get used because I slip into the mentality of saving it for when I really need it.
Perhaps one day I will stop doing this, but that day is not today.
