Let’s Replay Doom II #17: The Dangers of the Dark
When you think of obstacles and traps in this game, darkness usually doesn’t come to mind even though it should. Enemies appearing out of hidden areas is one thing, but not being able to see them clearly is quite another and, when added as a part of another trap, can be what tips it into being devious. When you don’t know where the opponents that are attacking you are, some people will panic and that leads to their quick defeat. The last thing you should do is panic but if you can’t see who you’re meant to be firing on, what chance do you have?
There are a few things that you can use to pinpoint where they are to some degree. Enemies with hit scan weapons reveal themselves when firing and projectiles can be followed back to their point of origin if you’re observant. Certain enemies make noise when they move about, allowing you to roughly deduce where they are. Finally, almost all enemies become partially visible when you’re really close to them, but at that point you’ve got other problems. Your best bet when in darkness is to keep calm, take out the enemies you know the location of and then carefully move forward. It’s slow but it’s steady and that’s what will keep you alive.
