Let's Replay TNT Evilution #38: A Flawed yet Enjoyable End
You'd think after failing twice that the infernal forces would come up with a different big boss to lead their invasions, but I guess they launched this attack in a bit of a hurry and so had to fall back on somethinig they still had lying around. I would say that the Icon of Sin is unchanged from its appearance in Doom 2 save a smaller arena to battle them in, but the demons made an unfortunate oversight when building the entirely decorative staircase that they had absolutely no use for, giving us a huge advantage that we didn't really need.
I'm not going to complain.
I thought on how best to describe TNT Evilution for quite some time before recording the final two videos of the replay and in the end, one word kept coming up again and again in my mind: flawed. It has all the things that you've come to expect and enjoy about a Doom game, but there are little things that throw off the flow of gameplay and make some of the levels feel odd. This is a shame, as there are some wonderfully clever ideas for theming here and the new music is fantastic when it shows up. This isn't to say that I didn't enjoy the game, oh no; I loved playing through it again and now appreciate all the more the things it does well, but I can't ignore that which it doesn't. If some of the levels were a bit smaller or there were things to fill that emptiness, the game would be all the better for it. The final boss also needs tweaking just a little, as do a few other little things, but not even Doom and Doom II were flawless masterpieces in that regard.
If you like Doom and want more of it, I do still recommend TNT Evilution, but go in with the expectation that it's not quite going to match that which came before.
So, what's next for the Sunday slot? I'm changing my schedule up, with Monday to Saturday being taken up by the games voted for by the community. This means that Siege of Dragonspear is going to be taking this slot that I am now referring to as the Kikoskia slot, for the decision of what goes there will solely be mine.
As for what will replace that? We'll have to wait and see, won't we?
See you next week!
