I picked this game up from the Racial Justice bundle from itch.io.

What do you get when you cross Paper Mario, Undertale, literally any metroidvania game, and sprinkle in the twist of being part of the bad guys? You get Underhero! You are a faceless minion. Literally, as you wear a mask the entire time. You get the bright idea on how to defeat the current hero, which apparently you're not supposed to do. Your plan works a bit too well, and are then tasked by your boss with fixing things. The hero's sword, though, has tasked you with becoming the new hero because anyone with a brain can tell that your boss is gonna off you as soon as you fix things.

Underhero comes with the typical trappings of a game like this: you can upgrade various aspects of your character, there's a leveling mechanic, multiple worlds, secrets to find.. all the classics! What sets this game apart is the combat system, which is a sort-of-but-not-quite ATB system that ends up having fights be more like a dance. You have to time your actions to counter-act the actions of your enemy. You have a limited stamina bar that refills over time, so there's some resource management to it as well. It's really interesting, and I'm curious how complicated it gets later in the game.

The game is visually adorable, and the writing is extremely Paper Mario in influence. That's not a bad thing, but it is impossible not to see the influence in the character's dialog and humor. The platforming controls are pretty solid, and I've got no complaints about the sound. Overall it's a well-rounded experience. I'm looking forward to trying some more Underhero out in the future.
