I picked this game up from the Racial Justice bundle from itch.io.

Tonight we Riot is a side-scrolling brawler in the vein of River City Ransom, Scott Pilgrim, etc. You are a mob of angry citizens that are sick of the oppressive government. I assume you tried peaceful protesting to no effect, and have decided to pick up some brass knuckles and enact change. You beat the hell out of police officers, water cannon trucks, drones, etc. You can grow your mob at intervals within the levels and the more mob you have, the more effective your fighting. Take care of mob, and mob takes care of you.

This is... not a subtle game. It's come out in 2020, amidst some of the biggest protest movements in recent memory, and takes shots at various governments (and memes surrounding them). The first area is based on the unrest in Catalonia. The second map is 100% taking shots at Trump's America and the outlandish followers therein. This game gives very few shits about letting you know where on the left-right scale it sits as it lets you huck bricks at the police shooting rubber bullets at you.

The game looks great, and the sound engineering's a treat, but the controls leave something to be desired. You are told at the start of the game that you can direct the mob to locations, which you need to do so they don't blindly walk into preventable cross-fire. The issue is that the mob AI is bad, and doesn't listen very well. It may very well go where you tell it, but will still immediately pick a fight with something that'll waste it. It's frustrating. Also aiming at things to throw items at is a crap chute. You are as likely to hit something as to miss, which is a problem when you have limited ammo.

Overall Tonight we Riot's an interesting game, and with a few tweeks to the AI and combat interface, it would be a really fantastic game. As it is now, it ends up becoming more frustrating than it is fun.
