I picked this game up from the Racial Justice bundle from itch.io.

Hey so uhm... this is a rough one. This isn't a game, so much as an opportunity to walk through the thought process of someone with depression and suicidal ideation. You don't know who this person is, and there is very little context other than what is given as you walk along, reading notes that the author has left for themselves. The notes are not kind, which is exactly what you'd expect from your own mind when in a bout of depression.

So I've talked about my own near suicide attempt before on the internet. The article's gone, though the wayback machine's got me covered: https://web.archive.org/web/20150402062342/http://wallofscribbles.com/2013/the-day-i-nearly-died/, and I touch on it at the end of this video. The thing about being in a depressive state, especially one that gets you that low, is that your brain is the enemy. You get stuck in a self-destructive loop of feeling worthless, your brain confirming said worthlessness, and then sinking lower.

Down is an extremely raw, though understated, look into the inner thoughts of the author, and if you've been there, it is... deeply affecting. If you've not, you might find down to be really frustrating to experience. Why would you say these things to yourself? Welcome to depression! I guess!

I'm really glad I got to experience down, and I hope the author is doing better now. The thing about persistent depression is it's never actually gone. It hides. It waits. It will seize on any opportunity it can to feast upon your joy if you let it. It happens. Just remember people care about you, you have worth, and the world will be a little dimmer without you in it.
