Part 11 of my playthrough of Mother 3, and the finale.

Well, my time with Mother 3 has come to a close. What a wild ride it's been, and what a disappointing ending it was for me. I know that ending was supposed to be emotionally fulfilling and cathartic, but honestly? I just kind of fell flat.

The narrative pacing of this game did not work in its favor. It spends the first 4 chapters repeatedly stomping on our emotions and making sure you the player know: This is Not Your Mom's Earthbound. Then it spends 3 chapters telling you "oh hey go pull these pins before the bad guys do because dragon?" and then drops all of the plot-twist plot beats in the last 3 hours of the game. I'd had a good 10 hours of playtime to level out from the emotional beating I was given at the start of the game, and then they try and ram some down my throat right before the end. It just didn't land at all for me.

I'm not going to say Mother 3 is a bad game, because it's not a bad game. It's a fine game, and extremely JRPG in it's trappings. I'll also admit that I came into this game with some high expectations because of my love of Earthbound/Mother 2, and this game fell short of those expectations. Mother 3 is fine, it just didn't land for me, and that's a goddamned shame.
