Longplay: Sonic Spinball (Genesis)
By: Sega Technical Institute
One of the weirder Sonic games out there, Sonic Spinball is basically what you get when you make a whole game out of Sonic 2’s Casino Night Zone.
Sonic 3 had a very troubled development and was not going to be ready in time for the 1993 holiday season, so Sega commissioned the American half of Sega Technical Institute to make something to take its place. Sonic Spinball was completed incredibly quickly to fill the void, even being coded in C instead of assembly to speed things up (at the cost of a lower but still stable framerate).
Considering it was made in about six months, Spinball holds up very well; it’s an incredibly memorable game with some pretty creative levels and fun gameplay. It also combines the games and the SatAM series, with a much darker tone and cameos from the Freedom Fighters (and even Scratch from AoSTH). If there is one knock though, it’s a very difficult game, likely because there’s only four levels. Be prepared to make some very precise shots in the Showdown!
