The third (and originally final) episode of Doom sees Doomguy climb down to the surface of Hell to put a stop to the demons’ invasion, led by the Spider Mastermind.
Inferno is a pretty big difficulty spike; the first few maps starve you of ammo, so you need to think fast when fighting until you can build up your weapons and ammo. Thankfully, they don’t overwhelm you with too many enemies, so it’s all doable. Later maps in the episode get more complex, like Unholy Cathedral and Limbo, where you’ll need to navigate some pretty confusing layouts; I didn’t want to spend several minutes stumbling around remembering where the keys are in these maps so I used a guide for them.
The best map in the episode is the secret map, Warrens, which seems like just a copy of Hell Keep at first. Gimmicky maps like these would become a central focus in Doom 2, for better or worse.
As far as the Spider Mastermind, yeah, you really can kill it that fast. As disappointing a fight as it is, that particular strategy won’t work half the time because of its extremely dangerous chaingun, so you’ll need some BFG practice before you attempt that kill.
