Mariner 2 was the first human-made spacecraft to reach another planet, alunched at August 27 1962 fro LC-12, Cape Canaveral on top of an Atlas-AgenaB rocket. Mariner 2 made it's encounter at December 14 1962, flying past Venus at an altitude of 34773km.
