Yep, it's a pretty varied loophole. Here's some footage of combining glitched Pause-menu with other retry glitches and also some observations about its behavior in general.

0:00 - as expected, you can fiddle with the options as gameplay is going on in the background. So far I haven't found options which changing on the fly would influence the game in any dramatic way, though.

If you quit the game, the glitched Pause-menu will close, so the glitch doesn't carry over elsewhere in the game. However, sometimes having a menu window open can glitch the graphics of the game a bit. For instance, at the end of this clip some graphics from Pause-menu have displaced the regular loading screens when exiting the game.

0:56 - after doing the above, a superfluous "Yes / No" prompt was still present on the lower-right corner of the screen. This graphic didn't stay there forever, though. It disappeared by itself eventually, perhaps upon another quit / reload.

1:19 - just showing various other effects the glitched Pause-menu has. Closing the regular menu in the middle of a cutscene causes the cutscene camera to reset or become disabled.

Example 1, the C1-C2 start cutscene.

Example 2, the C1-C3 start cutscene.

Example 3, the C1-C8 start cutscene.

Example 4, the C1-C8 set piece fail cutscene.

1:51 - closing the regular Pause-menu in the middle of some special fail cutscenes can screw its colors and sometimes timing up. Here's C1-C3 special fail cutscene for one. At first I thought the game crashed at the end of the cutscene, but it didn't. For some reason the game just hung up for a long time before finally continuing.

2:17 - doing classic retry glitch at C1-C2 end, except this time with regular Pause-menu. As you can see, it's just the usual retry glitch effect with regular Pause-menu open. This allows you the luxury of turning the camera angle after Max becomes stuck on the balcony at the end, which is not much of a luxury to be honest.

Since you can't retry in the middle of a combined cutscene (at least so far that is always the case), this precludes creating extra glitchy effects using the regular Pause-menu along with retry glitch. So, this variation just doesn't seem to have much purpose so far. But I guess we should keep our eyes open just in case. The cutscene Pause-menu is the more interesting Pause-menu to use with retry glitch.

2:55 - you get slightly different effects if you close the Pause-menu at different times during a combined cutscene. In this example I close the menu at the start of the combined cutscene, showing some more of the unloaded innards of the house (enough for us to witness a poor thug falling into OoB). The effect isn't very remarkable in general, but it should be examined some more.

And as a general rule: if you want unique effects from the cutscene Pause-menu, don't close it early. Otherwise you usually revert back to regular retry glitch effects.

3:19 - combining LMS + retry + glitched Pause-menu. Sometimes it works like expected. However...

3:40 - it's more common to get an alternative reaction when using glitched Pause-menu with LMS + retry, where Max moves in a jittery, slow way and fails in the most precursory of tasks. Poor Max...

4:01 - combining melee + retry + glitched Pause-menu. This seems to be a pretty pointless variation since it gives identical effects to normal melee + retry glitch.

4:27 - combining death + retry + glitched Pause-menu. In certain situations this creates unique results compared to normal death + retry glitch, so I guess it should be tested more too. Too bad so many death + retry glitches lead to softlocks instead of actually cool effects around the game...

---

In brief: this game is nuts.
