Battlefield 3 - out of map and small skip in Uprising
8Beneath the graphically impressive veneer, Battlefield 3 is unpolished and buggy as hell. It might very well be the Ascension of first-person shooters.
I wasn't planning on really glitching it, but I did find a strange OoB at the start of the third level Uprising. A cursory search on YT suggested that this particular OoB wasn't known before, so here it is.
There is this scripted part where you are alone and weaponless in enemy territory and have to sneak back. Normally you crawl through a crawlspace and have a QTE fight against a big rat (I wish I was joking). All this takes around 37 seconds to do.
But there's an alternative route now: if you vault on top of the military vehicle on the path from as "left" as possible, the soldiers around the place won't notice you. From here you can jump on top of the cliffs and run into OoB. Have to do this part fairly fast, though, since you're on a timer before you're insta-killed.
I didn't find a way to get from OoB directly to the door which you have to open to load the next area, there's just too much insta-kill area (or invisible walls) on the way. So you have to run around the temple-like structure, step in through the half-unloaded back entrance and examine the door from this direction. All this takes around... 40 seconds to do. Yeah, it's not much of a skip, is it?
(Note: I later realized that sprinting and jumping makes you move much faster, and could thus cut down the comparison time.)
As a bonus you can kill the first guard on the path without a dedicated sneak killing animation which might save a second. Since you walk into the building hitting its triggers in reverse order, you can fight the enemies inside in smaller waves and skip some entirely because they become A.I.-less, perhaps saving some extra time too. So... I don't know if this trick costs or saves time in the end.
But at least it looks nice, and gives hope that other skips too might be possible in this extremely scripted, invisible wall-laden game.
This was played on the unpatched PS3-version. Other ports and versions might give different results?
