Max Payne w/ 3D spatial sound π§ (OpenAL Soft HRTF audio)
USE HEADPHONES ONLY with any virtual surround like Windows Sonic turned off.
This is Max Payne with OpenAL Soft HRTF [IRC_1037 tables] through DSOAL. Max Payne was one of the very first games I covered on this channel back in 2018 using CMSS-3D, and I figured it was about time I revisited this game with the superior 3D audio software. The "Level & Difficulty Selector" also made things much more manageable. I always thought the restaurant level would make for a good 3D audio demonstration but WOW! This is something, alright. Granted, it's very obvious where the point sources for the flame SFX are, but it's still worlds apart from the Resident Evil Village Atmos demo I recorded earlier this year. It's also much more accurate than the CMSS-3D sounded. I highly recommend playing with the volume slider set to 50% or less, though, as this game gets extremely loud very quickly which sets off the hard limiter.
Max Payne is unique from most other games with 3D audio because it attaches the listener position to Max himself, rather than the camera. This means you can hear his footsteps underneath him as he runs in the sewer, or hear gunshots slightly underneath himself too. Ordinarily this could risk disorientating the player, but Max always faces where the camera is pointing so it works pretty well. For another example of this method, check out "The Thing with 3D spatial sound π§ (OpenAL Soft HRTF audio".
Unfortunately, I did have some problems getting Max Payne 1 to work. In case it's not working for you, try the following:
1. Start with clean install or verify game files on Steam.
2. Use the Max Payne sound patcher (https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/508-max-payne-sound-fix/)
3. Load the game in Creative ALchemy using real hardware, ALchemy universal, or the restriction remover.
4. Start the game once and load into the tutorial level.
5. Shut off the game and install DSOAL into the Max Payne directory.
