This is Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy with OpenAL Soft HRTF [IRC_1037 tables]. This PS2-era action-adventure game was actually re-released on Steam with OpenAL for full 3D audio and EFX reverb. I think they may have actually provided an old version of OpenAL Soft, but I still needed to swap the .dll with the latest OpenAL Soft 32-bit .dll renamed to OpenAL32.dll. This video begs the question: if the people who re-released this game can use the OpenAL API for 3D sound, then why can't all devs do the same? This was also ported to other modern consoles like the Switch, so it's not a case of "OpenAL not being cleared to use on console" like I've heard people in the industry tell me.
The 3D audio is really well done and immersive in Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy, moreso than anything the PS5 or Microsoft's Windows Sonic/Dolby Atmos is capable of. Dungeon segments like these full of moving platforms and torch sounds really showcase it the best. I feel like this is the closest we'll ever get to hearing a Zelda game with full binaural audio. Oh well, at least this game is alright.
